«I no longer live, but Christ lives in me»: An Ignatian Impulse. God has dared to create another ego endowed with freedom. This endeavour failed. Henceforth man existed focused on himself driven by greed and anxiety. God himself entered into human history, in order to restore man to his original freedom. To deny being an ego seems to be the radical solution; it has been realised many times in history. True healing requires instead the cooperation of the human ego. In his Spiritual Exercises Ignatius of Loyola began by focusing on the discrepancy between an idealised ego-perception and the reality of the retreatant. God’s mercy visible in Christ frees man to accept his sinful reality. Based on this acceptance he is able to discover the invitation to follow Christ and thus to become like the incarnate God himself.
