Das Kreuz des Erlösers und die Theodizee

Abstract / DOI

Theodicy and the Redeemer’s Cross: A Dogmatic Reflection. If Jesus was only the brother of all who suffer, crying out to his God, then his cross is the epitome of the theodicy question. This is how Johann Baptist Metz and many liberation theologians see it. But if Jesus is not only the passive victim of the executioners crucifying him, but at the same time the son who is «same in essence» with the divine father, then infinitely more happens on Golgotha than the execution of an innocent man. God himself goes with the man Jesus to the place where the opposite of love is: «hell». Jesus’ cross is not only a cry for meaning, but also its answer.
