Zusammenfassung / Abstract
Diese und die nächste Ausgabe der Römischen Quartalschrift enthalten mehrere Beiträge zweier Tagungen, die in Rom in den Jahren 2014 und 2015 stattfanden, hauptsächlich die Vorträge der zweiten Konferenz am Campo Santo Teutonico. Hier lag das Hauptinteresse auf der Spätantike und dem frühen Mittelalter mit ihrer bedeutenden Transformation kultureller Verhaltensweisen als Folge der Christianisierung des Römischen Reichs. Teil dieses Prozesses war das neue kulturelle Umfeld von Traum und Schlaf, von Nacht und Wachsamkeit, von Zeitkontrolle und Entspannung, von Askese und Sexualität. Die Bedeutung von Traum und Schlaf in ihrem weiteren Kontext zu verstehen, hilft viel, die spätantike Kultur als ganze besser zu verstehen.
„Rome at night: A cultural history of dream and sleep in the late Roman Empire“. International conference of the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz and the Roman Institute of the Görres Society – This and the next issue of the Römische Quartalschrift contain several contributions of two conferences hold in Rome in 2014 and 2015, mainly of the second conference at the Campo Santo Teutonico. Here the main interest was focussed on the late antique and early medieval times with their significant transformation of cultural behaviours as a result of the christianization of the Roman Empire. Part of this process was the new cultural setting of dream and sleep, of night and vigilance, of time control and relaxing, of asceticism and sexuality. To understand the significance of dream and sleep in their broader context helps much to understand better the late antique culture as a whole.
