Christus, die wahre Sonne. Der Morgenhymnus «Splendor paternae gloriae». Mit dem Hymnus «Splendor paternae gloriae» hat der heilige Ambrosius ein kostbares Gebet geschaffen, das noch heute in der Tagesliturgie gesungen wird. Der Artikel bietet eine Interpretation des Hymnus und beleuchtet wichtige Motive wie die Metapher des Lichts und der Sonne, die Göttlichkeit des Sohnes in antiarianischer Ausrichtung und den Topos der «nüchternen Trunkenheit». Ambrosius gelingt es, den lichterfüllten Christusmetaphern eine besondere Ausdruckskraft zu verleihen, die mit der Tageszeit des «in aurora» gesungenen Gebets harmoniert.
Jesus, the true sun. The hymn «Splendor paternae gloriae».With his hymn Splendor paternae gloriae, St Ambrose created a precious prayer that is still sung today in the liturgy of the day. The article offers an interpretation of the hymn and illuminates important motifs such as the metaphor of light and the sun, the divinity of the Son in an anti-Arian orientation and the topos of «sober drunkenness». Ambrose succeeds in giving the light-filled metaphors of Christ a special expressiveness in harmony with the daytime of the prayer which is sung «in aurora».
