Die Freiheitsidee der Aufklärung und die katholische Tradition. Der Artikel beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, wie sich die Idee der naturrechtlichen Freiheit aller Menschen in der Aufklärung entwickelte und in der amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitserklärung von 1776 und der französischen Revolution von 1789 politische Gestalt annahm. Er beschreibt die Reaktionen der katholischen Kirche auf diesen Freiheitsgedanken und geht schließlich der Frage nach, wie sich die katholische Freiheitstradition mit der Tradition der Aufklärung deckt und wie sie sich bis heute von ihr unterscheidet.
The Enlightenment's idea of freedom and the Catholic tradition. This article deals with the question of how the idea of natural law freedom for all people developed during the Enlightenment and took political shape in the American Declaration of Independence of 1776 and the French Revolution of 1789. It describes the reactions of the Catholic Church to this idea of freedom and finally it considers the question of how the Catholic tradition of freedom coincides with the Enlightenment tradition and how it still differs from it today.
