Benedikt XV. und Pius XII. versuchten, jeder in seiner Weise, Einfluss auf Politik und Diplomatie und generell auf die Katholiken auszuüben, um einen Krieg zu verhindern bzw., als er ausgebrochen war, ihn zu beenden. Das Ergebnis war beide Male dasselbe. Die päpstlichen Friedensappelle übten keinerlei Wirkung auf die Regierungen und Diplomaten aus. Sie stießen jedoch bei den Völkern selbst auf ein positives Echo.
The ability of the Popes to mobilize during the two World Wars – Benedict XV and Pius XII tried, each in his own way, to exert influence on politics and diplomacy, and on Catholics themselves, in order to avoid war, and if war had started then to end it. The result was, in both cases, the same. The papal appeals for peace had not the slightest impact on governments and diplomats; they found good soil in the people themselves, however.
