Zusammenfassung / Abstract
Die erste polnische Reise von Papst Johannes Paul II. gilt als Schlüsselereignis, das zum Niedergang des Sozialismus beigetragen hat. Der Artikel zeigt auf der Grundlage polnischer Quellen, wie der Vatikan die Orte, den Verlauf und die mediale Übermittlung der Reise aushandelte und welche Wirkung sie entfaltete. Die polnische Regierung, so wird deutlich, machte zahlreiche Zugeständnisse, um Prestige zu gewinnen, versuchte aber gleichzeitig, die Kontrolle über das Ereignis und seine Interpretation zu behalten. Die Performance der Papstauftritte und das Verhalten der rund 10 Millionen Besucher schufen jedoch neun Tage lang einen Gegenentwurf für die sozialistische Welt. Wie interne Umfragen zeigen, förderte dies auch die Religiosität in Polen.

The article shows, on the basis of Polish sources, how the Vatican negotiated the places, the course and the medial transmission of the trip in advance, and what effect it unfolded. The Polish government, it becomes clear, made numerous concessions to gain prestige, but at the same time tried to keep control of the event and its interpretation. The performance of the Pope’s appearances and the behaviour of the approximately 10 million visitors, however, created a counter-design for the socialist world for nine days. As internal surveys indicate, the event also also promoted religiousness in Poland.
