Auf dem Gebiet der antiken Synodenforschung sind die von römischen Bischöfen berufenen und präsidierten römischen Synoden ein weitgehend vernachlässigtes Gebiet. In diesem Artikel möchte der Autor ihre Bedeutung und Funktion beleuchten angesichts der Tatsache, dass ab der zweiten Hälfte des vierten Jahrhunderts die Idee des Primats der römischen Bischöfe immer wichtiger wurde. Nachdem er die verschiedenen Arten von römischen Synoden sowie ihre Teilnehmer und ihre Aufgaben skizziert hat, illustriert er die Beziehung zwischen dem Papst und seinen Synoden.
Primacy and collegiality. The Roman bishop and his synods in the first millennium – In the field of research on the ancient councils, the Roman synods convoked and presided by Roman bishops are a widely neglected area. In this article, I want to elucidate their importance and function in view of the fact that from the second half of the fourth century onwards the idea of the primacy of the Roman bishops became increasingly important. After giving an outline of the various types of Roman synods as well as their participants and their tasks, I illustrate the relationship between the Roman Pontiff and his synods.
