Ricœur explored the border zones between philosophy and theology without violating a strict philosophical ethos. In reconstructing his philosophy of religion, the entire philosophical project of Ricœur discloses its deep impregnation by the question of the subject. Out of this quest he derives the claim on religion, not to alienate the subject from oneself but to contribute to the realization of selfhood - above all by the way it presents the idea of the absolute.
