In his epistles Paul again and again presses on the one hand for faith, on the other hand for works of charity. Only Gal 5:6 explicitly connects works with faith. First of all the paper analyses the language and context of this frequently discussed verse. Subsequently a new interpretation is offered by giving up today’s wide-spread presupposition that only one single reason causes the events of our world. Instead philosophical principles of the antiquity are brought up to give a new insight into the idea of sola fides. A short view of other less distinct biblical passages concludes the essay.
