Dialektik der Umkehr. Konversion und Reversion im Leben und Werk Gerard Manley Hopkins’ S.J. Der Beitrag deutet Leben und Werk des viktorianischen Dichters als Ausdruck einer fortwährenden Dialektik der Umkehr. Ausgehend von seiner doppelten Konversion – dem Übertritt zum Katholizismus und dem Eintritt in die Gesellschaft Jesu – werden zentrale Stationen seines dichterischen Schaffens als geistliche Reversionen gelesen. Diese Umkehrbewegungen erscheinen nicht als lineare Entwicklung, sondern als spannungsvolle Einheit von Berufung und Entfremdung, Gottesnähe und Gottesferne, ästhetischer Erfahrung und asketischer Entscheidung. Im Rückgriff auf die ignatianische Spiritualität, vor allem auf die Lehre von der Unterscheidung der Geister, erweist sich Hopkins’ Dichtung als Ort theologischer Reflexion, in dem Umkehr bleibende geistliche Bewegung ist.
The Dialectic of Conversion. Conversion and Reversion in the Life and Work of Gerard Manley Hopkins SJ. This article reads the life and work of the Victorian poet as shaped by a sustained dialectic of conversion. Beginning with his double conversion – his reception into the Catholic Church and his entry into the Society of Jesus – it understands key moments of his poetic development as forms of spiritual reversion. These movements are not treated as stages of linear progress, but as a dynamic unity marked by tension between vocation and alienation, divine presence and absence, aesthetic experience and ascetic commitment. Drawing on Ignatian spirituality, especially the discernment of spirits, the article presents Hopkins’ poetry as a site of theological reflection in which conversion remains an ongoing spiritual movement.
