The Persian period (c. 540–330 BCE) runs as a vivid thread through the formation of the Hebrew Bible, a time when theological, ethnic, and socio-political identities were renegotiated under imperial constraint. The community of Yehud—a small, politically circumscribed province of the Achaemenid Empire centred on Jerusalem—produced a literature that is best understood against this specific backdrop. While earlier scholarship often viewed Persian rule through the lens of the Cyrus Cylinder’s rhetoric of toleration, a growing body of specialist work now reveals this policy as a sophisticated instrument of governance rather than an altruistic ethos. Imperial tolerance functioned as governance without embrace, securing quiescence without guaranteeing belonging. It is within this gap—between imperial rhetoric and provincial reality, between conditional toleration and full inclusion—that the subversive voices explored in this collection take shape and acquire urgency. This special issue shows how multiperspective approaches to questions of equality, diversity, and inclusion can enhance our understanding of biblical literature and contribute to broader reflections on identity, justice, and the construction of a common life under conditions of imperial constraint.
