The Modest Venus and the Garment of Grace. The article asks how nakedness is perceived and represented, and why it may be regarded as offensive, sexist or emancipatory in different contexts. Drawing on Erik Peterson’s Theology of Clothing, nakedness is interpreted as a sign of human vulnerability and mortality. The decisive issue is the gaze directed at the body: an objectifying gaze makes it available for use, whereas God’s loving gaze does not reduce the person to what is visible but recognises the dignity of embodied existence.
