The Form of Truth. On the Relevance of Hans Urs von Balthasar’s Theological Aesthetics in Dialogue with Blaise Pascal. This article examines the relevance of Hans Urs von Balthasar’s theological aesthetics in the light of the current crisis of perception, in which reality is increasingly reduced to accessibility, functionality and predictability. In contrast, Balthasar restores the importance of seeing and the category of the Beautiful as a dimension on a par with the True and the Good. Truth is not revealed first and foremost in the concept, but in its appearance, in its form. Central to this is the figure of the Crucified One, in whom the glory of God becomes visible as kenotic and vulnerable beauty. In Pascal’s anthropology of misery and greatness, his concept of the cœur and the distinction between esprit de géométrie and esprit de finesse, Balthasar recognises a form of reason that remains receptive to the symbolic depth of reality and which does not systematically resolve the contradictions of human existence, but rather brings them to light through language. Herein lies the enduring relevance of theological aesthetics as a school of perception that enables human beings to perceive reality beyond mere accessibility and the consumption of images.
