The Theology of Spirituality: A «Favorable Cultural Laboratory» for Religious Orders. Even though the phenomena themselves are ambivalent, «spirituality» is a central category in understanding the importance of religion and meaning in the late modern period. Should theology refuse to enter into a meaningful dialogue with this phenomenon? Religious orders and their communities transmit great traditions of Christian spirituality, that much is clear. However, in the area of Christian spirituality they have the additional and indeed obvious role of confirming theological soundness while performing the work of transformation and modernization. This «megatrend of spirituality», which requires for discernment the «patrimony of salvation of the religious orders», is exactly what will lead to cultural and interreligious dialogue.
