Das Grab des Apostels Paulus in Rom. Zum Stand der archäologischen Untersuchungen in der Confessio und unter dem Hauptaltar in St. Paul vor den Mauern. In den Jahren 2002 , 2003 und erneut dann 2006 fanden unter der Leitung von Giorgio Filippi Grabungen in Sankt Paul vor den Mauern statt. Ziel waren die Klärung der Situation in und unter dem Hauptaltar einerseits sowie eine Neugestaltung der Confessio andererseits, die dem Wunsch der Gläubigen nach einer angemessenen Verehrung des Paulusgrabes entgegenkam. 2007 wurden dann dem bei diesen Arbeiten teilweise freigelegten Sarkophag Materialproben entnommen, die zu der jahrhundertealten Vermutung, dass es sich um das Grab des Völkerapostels Paulus handele, zumindest nicht in Widerspruch standen. Da man bei den Grabungen – Filippi spricht von „Tastgrabungen“ – nur mit größter Vorsicht und in kleinen Schritten, nicht großflächig vorgehen konnte, mussten auch die Grabungsergebnis sukzessive, sozusagen „häppchenweise“ vorgelegt werden. Der Beitrag versucht, über diese schwer nachzuvollziehende Publikationslage einen möglichst klaren und gerafften Überblick zu geben.
The Tomb of the Apostle Paul in Rome. On the Status of the Archaeological Investigations in the Confessio and under the High Altar in St Paul Outside the Walls. In 2002, 2003 and again in 2006, excavations took place in Saint Paul Outside the Walls under the direction of Giorgio Filippi. The aim was to clarify the situation in and under the main altar on the one hand, and to redesign the Confessio on the other, which met the wishes of the faithful for an appropriate veneration of St Paul's tomb. In 2007, samples of material were taken from the sarcophagus that had been partially uncovered during this work, which at least did not contradict the centuries-old assumption that the tomb was that of Paul, the apostle to the nations. Since the excavations - Filippi speaks of "tactile excavations" - could only be carried out with the greatest caution and in small steps, the results of the excavations had to be presented successively, "in bits and pieces", so to speak. The article attempts to give as clear and concise an overview as possible of this publication situation, which is rather difficult to comprehend.
