Joas argues for an account of religious studies that is compatible with practiced religion. This attempt takes place on three fields: (1) the history and methodology of sociology, (2) the sociological interpretation of religion in opposition to Weber’s concept of «disenchantment», (3) the relevance of religion for the cultural history of mankind. Following this, the article focusses on the consequences of Joas’ concept for the relationship of religious studies and theology – taking into account the specific problems of Catholic theology to defend its character as a science in the 19th century.
