Profane Food or Holy Meal? New Testament Reflections on Secularisation Tendencies in Eating Contexts. Meals, or more generally spoken, eating contexts are a fundamental dimension of human life and can be analyzed sociologically as a multidimensional phenomenon which combines different aspects and spheres of meaning. One of them is the religious dimension, which, however, can be subject to secularisation processes. And developments of this kind can already be found when we look upon the New Testament and the Early Christianity. The article illustrates this by means of some New Testament examples and draws systematic conclusions concerning the religious dimension of meals – or the lack of it.
