In the Presence of the Third: Peter Handke on the Promise of Love. In the sacrament of matrimony the shared history of husband and wife positions itself in the presence of a «third». God’s yes to the lovers’ yes builds an invisible insurance of the visible union. In his notes the author Peter Handke thinks about the «third» as a reality available for the married couple at any time. This essay considers the consequences of this insight for a theology of the sacraments.
