Conscience – Free and Bound: Its Role in Democratic Communities. Conscience has a specific role in democratic communities, which are in need of common values and of consensual ethical convictions. This article shows how (freedom of ) conscience is connected with the protection of human dignity and justice. In this context the role of church and belief is highlighted. Furthermore it is important to relate autonomy and heteronomy of conscience ever anew.
