Die Septuaginta – ein jüdischer und christlicher Text

Abstract / DOI

The Septuagint – a Jewish and Christian Text. The Hebrew Bible is the only piece of Ancient Near Eastern literature that was translated into Greek and Latin and thus became formative for European civilization. Without the Septuagint, the Jewish religion would arguably never have gained any status beyond that of a provincial religion. In its Greek translation, the Hebrew Bible became accessible to a culture of which philosophy was the leading discipline. This paved the way for the development of a philosophical reading of Scripture that would probably never have emerged without this Greek translation. This contribution provides a glimpse on current trends in Septuagint research and demonstrates that a parting of ways took place in the Jewish and Christian appraisal of this originally Jewish translation.
