Hermann-Josef Große Kracht: Magnifica humanitas: An unexpected renaissance of the Church’s social teaching
The eagerly awaited encyclical Magnifica humanitas aims to address “the age of artificial intelligence” in a particular way. However, it is by no means ‘merely’ an AI encyclical. Rather, it deliberately – and in unexpected detail – draws on the now 135-year history of papal social teaching and situates itself within this tradition. With Magnifica humanitas, the ‘social teaching of the Church’ – which played only a minor role in the programs of Benedict XVI and Francis – is once again prominently on the Vatican’s agenda. This article describes the self-understanding, foundations and principles of the Church’s social teaching as set out in the encyclical. It also makes clear that the Pope is explicitly concerned with perspectives on a realistic and sober approach to politics, one that does not succumb to cynical resignation, yet also refrains from naively reducing politics to morality.
