Christian Spieß: A strong commitment to human rights and many unanswered questions. On the political ethics of the encyclical Magnifica humanitas
The Church’s social teaching – alongside issues of social and economic ethics – has always addressed questions of political ethics as well. In particular, however, the path towards the recognition of civil liberties and democratic participation rights has been marked by detours and missteps. With the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965) and Pacem in terris (1963), Leo XIV places the significance of human rights at the heart of Magnifica humanitas and links them to universal human dignity, which he distinguishes as moral, social, existential and ontological dignity. Through the Council’s declaration on religious freedom, he reaffirmed the separation of religion and politics and emphasized that both should act with complete autonomy. Beyond these clear positions, however, the encyclical also contains many vague formulations and leaves important questions unanswered.

Dans la déclaration conciliaire sur la liberté religieuse, il réaffirme la séparation entre religion et politique et souligne que les deux doivent agir en toute autonomie. Au-delà de ces prises
