Anna Puzio: The Implicit Philosophy of the Environment and Technology in the AI Encyclical Magnifica humanitas
This article examines the implicit philosophy of the environment and technology in the AI encyclical Magnifica humanitas and situates the encyclical within current philosophical and ethical debates. To this end, it examines the relationship between humans and technology, the significance of the body, anthropocentrism and the relationship with the environment. It emerges that, although the encyclical presents open-minded and nuanced arguments, it remains wedded to a central role for humanity and fails to engage sufficiently with contemporary ethical debates on the environment and technology. The article then critically examines the encyclical’s relationship to transhumanism, its collaboration with the company Anthropic, and issues of power. It concludes with a brief assessment of the extent to which the encyclical can serve as a guide for theology and the Church in future AI-related matters.

Cet article examine la philosophie implicite de l’environnement et de la technologie contenue dans l’encyclique sur l’IA Magnifica humanitas et replace cette encyclique dans le contexte des débats philosophiques et éthiques actuels. À cette fin, elle met en lumière la relation entre les êtres humains et la technologie, l’importance du corps, l’anthropocentrisme et le rapport à l’environnement. Il apparaît que l’encyclique, bien qu’elle présente un argumentaire ouvert et nuancé, reste ancrée dans une vision centrée sur l’être humain et ne s’inscrit pas suffisamment dans les débats éthiques actuels sur l’environnement et la technologie. L’article examine ensuite de manière critique la position de l’encyclique vis-à-vis du transhumanisme, sa collaboration avec l’entreprise Anthropic et les questions de pouvoir. Il se termine par une brève évaluation de la mesure dans laquelle l’encyclique peut servir de guide à la théologie et à l’Église dans les futures questions relatives à l’IA.
