Mara Klein: Gender Diversity as the new Focus of the Cultural Battle over Gender: An Attempt to provide Guidance
Among the current social conflicts surrounding diversity, the culture war over “gender”—and in particular over the diversity of sexual and gender identities—is certainly one of the most prominent. Starting from the premise that the culture war has become an overarching phenomenon, this article introduces various perspectives on and definitions of “gender” that dominate the discourse. Divided into three spheres of action—the Catholic Church, politics, and the public sphere—the article examines four key arenas—family, the body, education, and language—taking Germany as an example from the Global North. Particular attention is paid to the debate surrounding trans* identity and gender diversity as a new focal point in an increasingly diffuse and heated debate.

Parmi les conflits sociaux actuels autour de la diversité, la guerre culturelle relative au « genre » et en particulier à la diversité des identités sexuelles et de genre est certes l’un des plus remarquables. Partant de la classification de la guerre culturelle comme phénomène global, l’article présente les différents points de vue et définitions du « genre » qui dominent le discours. Relativement aux trois champs d’action : Eglise catholique, politique et phère publique, il met en lumière, à titre d’exemple, quatre lieux de conflit : la famille, le corps, l’éducation et la langue – pour les pays du Nord global, en centrant la focale sur l’Allemagne. Une attention particulière est accordée au débat sur la trans-identité et la diversité sexuelle en tant que points centraux d’un débat de plus en plus diffus et envenimé.
