Virtual Presence Instead of Real Presence? On Digital Participation in the Liturgy. The coronavirus pandemic has caused not only massive restrictions for the Church’s liturgical life, but also a rapid increase in digitization; this has presented many new opportunities for people to participate digitally or virtually in events which are normally held in person. Questions concerning liturgy, digitality and virtuality have increased in topical relevance over the past year, both in theory and in practice, and require differentiated assessment. What does it mean to participate in a liturgical service digitally, and in what ways can it be done? What questions does this raise and what perspectives do they offer for us today?
