Traugott Jähnichen: Dialogue or Soliloquy? Comments on the Public Relevance of Social Ethics after Caritas in veritate
The encyclical underlines the dialogical and interdisciplinary approach of Christian social ethics. Both denominations recognize it as a condition of their social effectiveness. The author of the following paper, a Protestant social ethicist from Bochum, does not only refer to the far-reaching similarities, mostly in terms of content. He names, with due respect, differences as well: as regards to the concept of reason, the understanding of truth and dialogue, the assessment of natural law.

L’encyclique souligne l’approche dialogique et interdisciplinaire de l’éthique sociale chrétienne. Les deux confessions y voient un préalable à leur impact social. L’auteur de l’article, protestant et expert en éthique sociale à Bochum, évoque les nombreux points communs, notamment quant aux positions éthiques de fond. Mais, tout en reconnaissant ces convergences, il indique aussi les différences en ce qui concerne le concept de raison, la compréhension de la vérité et du dialogue ainsi que la place réservée au droit naturel.
