“1,200 years of abbey archives in the 21st century. The example of the archives of St Peter’s Archabbey in Salzburg” – This paper argues that Benedictine monasteries have always been places of sustained scientific research and that they should remain so. The promotion of research works best from the top down. The example of the archive of St. Peter’s Abbey in Salzburg exemplifies these two theses. The abbey is the one with the longest monastic tradition in the entire German-speaking world. Its records date from the 8th to the 21st century and are organised, preserved, researched and communicated by the author himself.
