Gerhard Wegner: Responsible Capitalism. The Social Initiative, the Common word and the Politicak Mandate of the Churches in Germany.
The social- and economic statements of the two great Churches in Germany don’t aim at making policies but facilitate politics. Focussing on being Christian, the want to promote the exchange of differing viewpoints and support the search for compromise. The following contribution exemplarily outlines the positions of the ecumenical social initiative of 2014 and the common word on the economic and social situtation in Germany of 1997. The contribution of the churches towards a general consensus on values and trust as well as the specific Christian argumentation is being identified. Thus, conflicting interests can be relativised and the ability for compromise as a basis of common action is emphasized. The price is an often criticized lack of concretion and clear political opinion.

Par leurs prises de position en matière de politique sociale et économique, les deux grandes Eglises en Allemagne ne cherchent pas à faire de la politique, mais à rendre possible la politique. En se référant au message chrétien, elles entendent établir un dialogue entre des positions divergentes et promouvoir la recherche de compromis. Cet article retrace, de façon exemplaire, les grandes lignes de l‘Initiative Sociale Oecuménique de 2014 et de la Déclaration Commune sur la situation économique et sociale en Allemagne, publiée en 1997. On reconnaît ce que les Eglises, partant d’une réflexion spécifiquement chrétienne, peuvent contribuer à un consensus général sur les valeurs et la confiance. Ainsi il est possible de relativiser des oppositons d’intérêts et d’identifier comme base d’une action commune la capacité à trouver des compromis. Le prix en est un manque, souvent critiqué, de sens concret et l’esquive de positions politques clairs.
