Shalom and Alaaf. “Celebrating Carnival and Commemoration are not Mutually Exclusive”.
Jewish culture and traditions in Germany had almost completely disappeared after 1945. In many areas they remained lost, in others they flourished again – as in the world’s only Jewish carnival association “Kölsche Kippa Köpp.” Founded in 2017, the Cologne-based association combines carnival and Jewish traditions. Amosinternational spoke with the founder and president of the association, Aaron Knappstein, about why celebration and commemoration definitely belong together and why he cannot speak of “normality” as long as the “Falafel und Kölsch” event has to take place with police protection.
