Michelle Becka: Overcoming Indifference - Shaping Migration. Migration and Integration in Fratelli tutti
A seminal aim of the encyclical Fratelli tutti is overcoming indifference to realise fraternity. This also applies to migration, which plays an important role in the encyclical. After outlining the understanding of human dignity in the encyclical, this article explains and discusses its contribution to the migration discourse. Two theses are put forward: The encyclical’s statements on migration represent important statements of Catholic social proclamation that can be connected to current migration discourses and at the same time enrich them. At the same time, the encyclical’s impact remains limited, which is due above all to the extensive lack of social ethical considerations oriented towards justice (and freedom).
Michelle Becka : Vaincre l’indifférence – gérer la immigration. Migration et intégration dans Fratelli tutti
Une des préoccupations majeures de l’encyclique Fratelli tutti, c’est de surmonter l’indifférence afin de réaliser la fraternité. Cela vaut également pour la migration qui joue un rôle important dans l’encyclique. Après avoir esquissé la compréhension de la dignité humaine dans l’encyclique, l’article explique et s’interroge sur ce que celle-ci apporte au débat sur la migration. Deux thèses sont avancées : Les remarques de l’encyclique sur la migration représentent des déclarations importantes de l’enseignement social catholique. Elles sont au niveau du débat actuel sur la migration et l’enrichissent en même temps. D’autre part, l’impact de l’encyclique est limité ce qui, avant tout, est dû au fait que des réflexions d’éthique sociale relatives à la justice (et la liberté) font largement défaut.
