Klára A. Csiszár: Towards a Multi-Ethnic and Multi-Religious Future? Collective Identities in Romania
With regard to culture, Romania is an exceptional case, particularly with respect to the living together of ethnic and religious entitites and their attitude towards each other. Inevitably, ‘postmodern man’ has taken over the role of ‘homo sovieticus’, who takes charge of himself and no longer (or not only) relies in his attitude towards life on traditional forms of identity (ethnicity and religion). Collective identities, on the other hand, still struggle for their self-assertion against other entities. This is due to the close interrelation of ethnic and religious identities, which is evident mostly in the Hungarian-speaking Protestant and Catholic minority, but also in the Romanian Orthodox majority. Social challenges for both the ethnic-denominational minorities as well as for he Romanian Orthodox majorities should be approached on the basis of the power of diversity and the power of togetherness. The deconstruction of traditionlist-collective identities and the shaping of togetherness for a good life in communality are imminent.

La Roumanie est un cas particulier sur le plan culturel, notamment en ce qui concerne le vivre-ensemble d’entités ethniques et religieuses et leurs attitudes réciproques. Inévitablement, « l’homo sovieticus » fut remplacé par « l’homme postmoderne » qui prend sa vie en main et, dans son interprétation de la vie, n’a plus (ou pas seulement) recours à des formes des identités traditionnelles (ethnie et religion). D’autre part, des identités collectives continuent de lutter pour s’affirmer face à d’autres entités. Cela explique l’interdépendance étroite des identités ethniques et religieuses qui est particulièrement évidente parmi les minorités protestantes et catholiques de langue hongroise, mais aussi parmi la majorité orthodoxe du pays. C’est par la force de la diversité et du vivre-ensemble que les minorités aussi bien que la majorité devraient faire face ensemble aux défis sociaux du pays. Il s’agit maintenant de déconstruire les identités collectives traditionalistes et d’inventer une coexistence susceptible de garantir une bonne vie en commun.
