Silvia Schroer: Animal Protection and Animal Ethics in the Old Testament. The Example of the Donkey
Next to the cow the donkey is the most important livestock animal in ancient Israel, just as it was in the great neighbouring cultures from Egypt to Mesopotamia. Thus, in the stories and law of the Old Testament he plays not just a minor role. Respect and care for the donkey, on whose strength as a working animal people relied on, are noticeable. With the Sabbath commandement for the donkey the Old Testament set a memorable landmark for animal protection.

Dans le vieil Israël comme dans lescultures voisines, de l‘Egypte à la Mésopotamie, l’âne était, avec le boeuf, l’animal domestique « productif » le plus important. Le rôle qu’il joue dans les contes et textes de loi de l‘Ancien Testament n’était donc pas secondaire. On y reconnaît d’une part du respect et du souci pour l’âne dont le travail était économiquement indispensable, et d’autre part la tendance à l’exploiter. Par extension du commandement sabbatique à l’âne, l‘Ancien Testament marque une date en signifi cative en matière de protection des animaux.
