Marie-Jo Thiel: Caring for Elderly People On the Ethical Challenges in French Society
Caring for the elderly is more than just health or home care. It is an attitude based on the responsibility that is due to elderly people, particularly the fragile and care-dependent. The duties that go along with this attitude are by far no longer taken for granted. The following contribution names some ethical challen ges that come with demographic change. Moreover, it examines inasmuch the prevailing culture of the technical and of anti-aging opposes the recognition of elderly people. That applies in particular to people with dementia. Finally, those who help are considered, the pressure they are subject to, and the legal framework that is to make sure that the autonomy of those in need of care is being preserved.
Marie-Jo Thiel : Prendre soin de la personne âgée. Quelques défi s éthiques dans la société française
Prendre soin des aînés est une attitude qui va au-delà des actes de soins ponctuels pour désigner une attitude en lien direct avec la responsabilité dûe aux aînés en particulier lorsqu’ils sont très fragiles et en situation de grande dépendance. C’est une tâche qui s’impose mais qui n’est pas toujours aussi évidente qu’il ne paraît. Cette contribution a pour objet d’identifi er quelques défi s éthiques en lien avec le changement démographique. Ensuite elle examine en quoi la culture technologique et anti-ageiste ambiante peut s’opposer à un regard bienveillant sur les plus âgés. Cela concerne en particulier les personnes souffrant de démence. Enfi n elle évoque la question des aidants, la pression qui repose sur eux, ainsi que l’encadrement juridique mis en place pour veiller au respect de l’autonomie des personnes dépendantes.
