Jindrich Šrajer: Christian Social Ethics in the Czech Republic Development and Current Situation
It is the objective of Catholic social teaching to fi nd answers to the social challenges of our times, to take part in the important political controversies, to point out new ways. How important, however, is social teaching in the Czech Republic today? How is it refl ected by the Church’s offi cials, or by the Christians? How is it taught and studied at the theology faculties? Does it have real infl uence on the majorityof society, on politics and on public opinion? The answers to theses questions in the following article refer largely to the period after the changes of 1989.

La tâche de l’enseignement social catholique, c’est de trouver des réponses aux défi s de société de l’époque, de participer aux grandes controverses politiques et de montrer des voies nouvelles. Mais quelle est, de nos jours, l’importance de l’enseignement social en République tchèque? Comment celui-ci se refl ète-t-il dans la pensée de la hiérarchie comme dans celle des chrétiens? Comment est-il étudié dans les facultés de théologie? A-t-il une infl uence réelle sur la pensée dominante dans la société, sur la vie politique et sur l’opinion publique? Les réponses à ces questions renvoient, en grande partie, à l’époque qui a suivi le tournant historique de 1989.
