Peace Work does not make the Headlines – Interview with Angelika Beer on Concepts and Perspectives of European Security Politics
The Greens‘ coordinator for Foreignand Security Politics in the European Parliament pleads for a consistent nuclear disarmament and for an unexceptional ban on cluster bombs. On the other hand, she sees the growing expectations coming up towards the EU with regard to security politics. Capability of military intervention has to be strengthened, most notably if it serves to prevent so-called ethnic cleansings. At the centre there is the protection of individuals and human rights. This raises several questions. What is going to be the ratio between future defence spendings and the investments into civil confl ict control? How will the tasks in the fi eld of security politics be divided between Europeans and Americans? How realistic are the claims of the 2008 Peace Survey, to prevent the US missile defence system in Eastern Europe, a ban on all space weapons or the withdrawal of all nuclear weapons from Germany? Last but not least: What has become of the slogan „Create Peace without Arms“, which the Greens had once written on their campaign banners?
